R.Y.N. are a UK-based duo probably best known for their Astral Death CD (Unrest Productions) and an excellent 7" on Drone Records. On this vinyl-only release R.Y.N. present 44 minutes of completely new recordings: a mix of archaic, unsettling, new and melancholy. This album took many months to record due to the care and attention to detail exacted by the duo. This LP provides both classic R.Y.N. darkness plus even heavier oppressive, dark, soundscapes that can only be fully appreciated on vinyl over the two side-long tracks: Archaic Techniques Of Ecstacy and Provisional Sketch Of The Mind. Pressed on black vinyl in a deluxe spot-varnish silk-screened card sleeve (by Seizure Palace) plus printed inner sleeve and inserts. If you don't know their work then this is definitely worth exploring. If you do know them then this is a must.

The English based R.Y.N. were initially formed a couple of years ago as Goathanger. Realising that this acronym probably wasn't going to make them famous plus the fact that original member Mendez left, the remaining members Burn and Glaister re-christened themselves R.Y.N. in 2003. Over the next couple of years they worked on their debut CD Cosmic Birth (for Turgid Animal records). Their second album Astral Death was released early 2008 (for Unrest records) and these titles should give you some indication of their music. Manipulating sound (often guitars and bass) into an unrecognizable sonic texture is what R.Y.N. are good at. This new album is no exception, but sounds considerably bleaker than their earlier efforts.

(The) two side-long tracks sound like a death carriage rattling through medieval streets.

There are echoes of industrial ambience with dark drones that sound like processed field recordings, there is clanging of objects that made me remember to play my Metgumbnerbone album later that evening. The music leaves no room to breathe, which makes for uneasy listening, but then again, that is the whole purpose of this album. Packed in a silk-screened card sleeve with lots of inserts (which, unfortunately, shine little light on this already dark album), this is grim music. Good music, but grim all the same. Great for lonely, depressed late-night listening. In the dark of course.

Rock-A-Rolla Magazine: Issue 25, Apr/May 2010 (reviewed by Scott McKeating) :: Visit web site here

For their first long playing vinyl, R.Y.N. have gone the full distance in creating their landmark, and probably most abstract release. Not satisfied with two mammoth sides of cold-evolution soundscapes, R.Y.N. have also put together an exquisitely decorated and printed package.Dropping instantly into amnesiac territory, the title track and opener has the feel of the geometric creeping of ice fractals - the forward momentum of some insect-army crawl. R.Y.N. have created the soundtrack to the glide of a still developing abstract machine/lifeform (perhaps their own skele-fish logo/mascot that accompanies their releases). The other side's 'Provisional Sketch Of The Mind' is also about movement, or more accurately a kind of slow sonic friction. Just ahead of distant clouds of flak, there's a metallic crystal ringing that's as much about weight as it is drones or tones. This is about as delicately heavy a piece of vinyl as you're likely to hear this year.

This record by R.Y.N. draws the title 'Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy' from the 1951 work of Mircea Eliade which was a comprehensive study on one of the most intriguing sets of beliefs to date. And I think that they really channel some of that energy in this release. If you close your eyes and FEEL the ravaging soundscapes they offer us, you'll begin to feel the pull as you're transported to another dark realm. Spacious and damning the two pieces take up a full side of the LP each, giving the listener ample time to give in to the powers within. These songs are aurally very tense, uneasy and create just the right amount of despair to grip you and not let you go. You'll find yourself very much immersed in an unnerving delve into the psyche of insanity. This album was crafted entirely from manipulated field recordings and the results show that R.Y.N. definitely have a mastery of their trade. Make sure to catch this one at home in the dungeon, alone, in the dark, with your vice of choice close by and let yourself be overtaken by its dreadful beauty.
