Mel & Dave are in fact Melanie Jonas and Dave Barker.

Between 1969 and 1973, the Trojan label released over 200 singles on its Upsetter imprint, a subsidiary label dedicated to music produced and/or performed by the great Lee "Scratch" Perry (who produced this record) and his house band, The Upsetters.

Dave Barker cut many tracks with Lee Perry and, contrary to what he sounds like on "Spinning Wheel" does have a genuinely good soulful voice (he was obviously having an 'off-day'). The song is widely available on retrospectives of the label and while the names of the actual musicians appearing on the song are not known they are most likely to include one or more of the following who appeared on all Upsetter sessions: Hugh Malcolm, Carlton "Carlie" Barrett, Lloyd "Tinleg" Adams (all played drums); Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso, Val Bennett (saxophone); Alva Lewis, Ranny "Bop" Williams (guitar); Gladstone Anderson (piano) and Aston Barrett (bass)
